The Commerce Commission is New Zealand’s competition, consumer, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency.  It plays a crucial role in ensuring New Zealand’s markets are competitive, consumers are well informed and protected, and sectors with little or no competition are appropriately regulated.

The Commission is an independent Crown entity responsible for enforcing laws relating to competition, fair trading, and consumer credit contracts. It also has regulatory responsibilities in relation to the electricity distribution, gas, telecommunications, fibre, fuel, dairy and airport sectors.

Due to its growth as an organisation, growing expectations, and the merger of its two high calibre legal teams, this significant new legal role within the Commission’s senior leadership team has been created.

Reporting to the Chief Executive and working to the Board, this tier 2 role is an exciting opportunity to drive the Commission’s newly combined legal services branch and its busy work programme.  With your talented team of expert legal practitioners you will be delivering high quality legal advice and services in support of the organisation in the areas of enforcement, litigation, economic regulation, consumer credit, fair trading, competition, corporate and administrative law matters.

Your talented legal services leadership team of five Chief Legal Counsels (in the areas of competition, economic regulation, corporate, credit, and fair trading) and a Practice Manager will work with you to deliver high quality legal services for a modern regulator with a large high profile work programme.

It will be your positive disposition, strong leadership and experience as a General Counsel in a large or complex organisation that will help the Legal Services branch deliver across the organisation.

To be considered for this position, your knowledge and experience will include:

  • deep expertise and high calibre as a high performing General Counsel and legal leader
  • having a reputation for excellence in the delivery of legal services
  • being a senior leader, with a track record of turning ideas into tangible delivery through your ability to lead a focused and committed team of technical experts
  • a track record of collaboration and building strong stakeholder relationships
  • in-depth understanding and experience in litigation, administrative law, regulatory law and the machinery of government.

This is a key senior role in the Commission and provides opportunity for a senior legal executive to assist the Commission in developing and operating a Fit for the Future regulatory regime providing long-term benefits for New Zealanders.
