The Commerce Commission is New Zealand’s competition, consumer, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency.  It plays a crucial role in ensuring New Zealand’s markets are competitive, consumers and businesses are well informed, and sectors with little or no competition are appropriately regulated.

The Commission is an independent Crown entity responsible for enforcing laws relating to competition, telecommunications, fair trading, and consumer credit contracts. It also has regulatory responsibilities in relation to the electricity distribution, gas, telecommunications, fibre, fuel, dairy and airport sectors.

Due to its growth as an organisation, growing expectations, a growing focus in the Consumer Credit area (including recent legislative change) and the desire to increase capacity for its senior leaders to collaborate more effectively with key stakeholders and across the organisation, this new role within the Commission’s senior leadership team have been created.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, this tier 2 role is an exciting and unique opportunity for a talented General Manager to lead, develop and be accountable for the Commission’s Consumer Credit regulatory function. You will also be the Commission’s most senior executive leader in its Auckland office.

The Credit branch’s work under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act protects New Zealanders when they borrow or buy goods on credit.  The Commission’s guidance and enforcement action contribute to making the lending system safe, transparent and fair.  It ensures that consumers have the right information to make borrowing decisions and that lenders are following the rules when setting fees, providing information and offering products.

It will be your positive disposition, strong leadership and upbeat approach that will help the Credit branch contribute collaboratively across the business and externally as the Commission implements its Fit for the Future programme of work.

To be considered for this position, your knowledge and experience will include:

  • being a senior leader, with a track record of turning ideas into tangible delivery through your ability to lead a focused and committed team
  • deep expertise in the credit or another regulatory system
  • a track record of collaboration and building strong stakeholder relationships
  • in-depth understanding of the machinery of government, regulatory systems and regulatory tools from strategy, enforcement, operational policy to outreach.

This is a key senior role in the Commission and provides opportunity for government and business savvy executives to assist the Commission in developing and operating a Fit for the Future regulatory regime providing long-term benefits for New Zealanders.
